Tribute Collection
The year was 1917. Young men from across Australia & New Zealand who answered the call, found themselves entrenched in the horrors of war. Our great uncle, Corporal Harry Wetzel was serving in the 22nd Battalion on the Western Front. Harry left Australia in 1915 aboard a ship bound for Gallipoli. He was wounded several times and still sent back to the battlefield. Tragically, on the 17th September 1917 his luck ran out and 21-year-old Harry lost his life on Westhoek Ridge, Belgium.
In November 1917, 13 year old Valentino Zannantonio Martin faced the harsh realities of life in Italy during World War 1. Captured by the German forces that invaded his village in the Dolomites, he summoned up the courage to escape and literally ran for his life. As a 23 year old, Valentino’s life would change forever aboard a ship bound for Australia.
A century later, Bundaberg Master Distillers’ Collection, Solera, won World’s Best Dark Rum, 2017. Integral to the solera process were European Oak casks that had aged Ruby Port for decades. This whisky is a marriage of those Ruby Port and Dark Rum expressions. Like those Anzac biscuits that were sent to the soldiers in WW1, it has toffee on the nose, golden syrup and cereal biscuit notes on the palate.
Our Tribute Collection Single Malt Whisky honours the brave volunteers who didn’t make it home, as well as those, like The Stillmaker, who had the courage to leave their homelands and forge a new life in Australia.
